Smart, Green, Liveable and Creative - the City of Adelaide’s Sustainability Program is committed to building our international reputation as a City that adapts to climate change and reduces carbon emissions, uses resources wisely, and is enriched by thriving natural ecological systems.
Carbon Neutral Adelaide
Carbon Neutral Adelaide is our community’s shared ambition to work together and make the City of Adelaide the world’s first carbon neutral city. To achieve our goal, as individuals and as a community we need to rapidly reduce our carbon emissions.
Reducing City Emissions
The City of Adelaide is internationally recognised for our commitment and contribution to reducing emissions. Between 2007 and 2013, the City of Adelaide’s carbon emissions reduced by 20%.
Reducing Council Emissions
Council has a long and successful history of demonstrating national and international leadership in climate change mitigation. The Carbon Neutral Strategy 2015-2025 sets an ambitious target of zero net carbon emissions from its operations by 2020.
Climate Change Adaptation
Changes to the global climate are unequivocal, and are evident from observations of increases in global average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice, and rising average sea level (IPCC 2013).
Water Management
South Australia is the driest state on the driest inhabited continent; as such we must ensure that we use our water resources wisely. Adelaide’s urban environment growth in levels of development and urban density are increasing the pollution pressures on our waterways and coastal waters.
Waste and Recycling
City of Adelaide’s residential kerbside waste and recycling collection service consists of three bins and booked hard waste.
Gardens
Community gardens are places where people come together to grow fresh food, learn, relax and make new friends. Community gardeners know that sharing land to grow food and other plants builds a sense of place and community.
