Commonwealth Home Support Programme

City of Adelaide’s CHSP team receives funding from the Australian Government to provide the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP).  This is a short-term support service for people aged over 65 years (or over 50 years for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islanders) who need some short term assistance to remain living independently in their homes.  The program is designed to work alongside residents to support them to achieve their wellness and reablement goals.

Who can receive the service?

Anyone who is on an Aged Pensioner or with a Commonwealth Senior’s Health Care Card if self-funded and who requires some short term support to achieve their goals. To be eligible to receive services from City of Adelaide you must receive a screening and assessment through the My Aged Care Gateway first. Council CHSP staff can support you in this process.

The My Aged Care website has been established by the Australian Government and is part of the changes to the aged care system.

How can we work with you to achieve your goals?

The program offers the following services to help residents achieve their wellness and reablement goals:

  • Domestic assistance;  such as ironing, linen changing, vacuuming, shopping from a list, spring cleans
  • Personal care;  such as showering or dressing while recovering from illness
  • Home Maintenance;  such as fixing a leaking tap or window, replacing light bulbs or batteries, cleaning exhaust fans or a/c filters, repairing trip hazards
  • Home Modifications;  such as installing grab rails, key safes and ramps
  • Basic Garden Maintenance; up to 10 hours per year for example reducing vegetation that causes safety issues
  • Transport to medical appointments;  within 20km of the Council area
  • Social Programs;  such as Easy Moves exercise class and the Healthy Ageing Shopping Bus run

Screening & Assessments

You will need to contact the My Aged Care gateway which is part of the Australian Government’s change to the aged care system, via the national contact centre 1800 200 422 or the website

A staff member will help you through the initial screening process. You will need to have your personal details and key information at hand. This call may take up to 30 minutes. Once you have completed your screening, the staff member doing your screening will either refer you straight to services (for something straight forward like a light bulb change) or they will refer you to the Regional Assessment Service (RAS). The RAS will then complete an in-home or telephone assessment with you, and will provide you with a range of service providers you can choose from.

If you wish to receive your service through City of Adelaide, please ensure you tell them that CoA is your preferred provider.

If you need support navigating this process please phone the City of Adelaide CHSP team on 8203 7203 who are able to assist you.

Fees & Charges

Fees for CHSP services vary depending on the type of services required and your financial position. Our fees for service are regularly reviewed to ensure fairness and equality and at the moment they are between $10 and $35 per service.  Safety measures are in place to ensure that financial hardship is not a barrier to receiving services.  Please call a CHSP team member on 8203 7203 to discuss your eligibility for a reduced fee for service or complete the form attached to this section and return it to the CHSP, City of Adelaide, GPO Box 2252, Adelaide 5001.
